Paul’s development of an argument on the basis of Scripture in Gal. 4 is inextricably connected with his emphasis upon the activity of the Spirit within those who are baptized. The letter to the Galatians is written to a congregation established by Paul, which in his opinion was on the verge of abandoning “the gospel” (Gal. 1:6–10).
