Instead of defining ritual on the basis of network size, I will propose an approach to relational rituals vis-à-vis their ‘transparency’ and ‘accessibility’ to network outsiders, which of course also reveals information about the type of network that ‘codifies’ a ritual practice. The phenomenon of relational ritual includes practices that are clearly understandable to many and in which any language user can take part (transparent and accessible rituals), as well as practices that are intentionally hidden and/or obscure and which exclude the involvement of the observer as participant (non-transparent and non-accessible rituals).

E. e. 7 Such conventions, which can gain popularity as in the case of köszike, often become the subject of social debates and criticisms, as they do not fit into the normative interpretation of ‘appropriateness’. In other words, societal conventions are usually regarded as normative, and conventions particular to relational networks, insofar as they significantly differ from societal ones, are often disregarded and criticised by those who do not identify as members of that given network. What, however, makes convention a complex phenomenon is that even the seemingly non-controversial category of societal conventions may also have different interpretations across relational networks within that society.

2 Convention There are certain routine practices which specifically regulate social interaction: the ways in which people negotiate, maintain and, in some cases, renegotiate their relationships. Those forms of recurrent schematic behaviour which follow patterns associated with interpersonal relating – including, for example, understandings of ‘politeness’, ‘humour’, ‘sarcasm’, ‘irony’ and so on – are defined in the present work as ‘conventional’. The definition of convention ‘Convention(al)’ is a widely used term in pragmatics, but this book utilises it in a specific way, by describing convention as a practice constructed within relational networks.
