Let us take a closer look at each to see how they can conspire against us in our efforts to manage organisations realistically. The Myth of Corporate Unity A major contributing influence on the perceived illegitimacy of political action is the ideal of corporate unity. This is an organisational fundamental from the perspective of a rational mindset. The Illegitimacy of Politics 35 It implies that organisations simply do not have a raison d’être if they do not have unity of purpose. Mission statements, vision and value creeds all serve to bind organisational members together, to draw the boundaries between them and the rest of the world.

We cannot dispense with hierarchy, and while the political mindset realises the possibility and relevance of individual power in achieving results, there is a real question as to how this power should be used in the interests of an organisation, without it being diverted substantially towards self-serving ends. In the rational mindset power is congruent with authority and seniority of position, and in theory, is not abused.
