Paolo scrive a metà degli anni Cinquanta. Trent'anni dopo, il Vangelo di Matteo e il Vangelo di Luca ci parlano della nascita verginale di Gesù per opera dello Spirito Santo.
Il Vangelo di Marco il più insistente nell'applicare a Gesù questo appellativo. Dio stesso lo proclama tale per ben due volte e come tale lo riconoscono gli spiriti impuri e il centurione romano che assiste alla sua agonia.
