Service troops included Engineers and Signals Corps, Transportation, Medical, Chemical, Finance, Ordnance, Military Police and Quartermaster troops. Personnel and administrative services were performed by the Judge Advocate General's Department (Legal), Special Services, the Corps of Chaplains and the Inspector General's Department. CHAPTER FOUR Non Divisional Units, Headquarters and the Staff Non Divisional Units Fewer than half of the tactical troops of the Army Ground Forces were actually organic to divisions; instead, they were in non divisional combat and service units.

All field artillery heavier than 155mm was of course pooled above divisional level, as were a considerable number of medium and lighter pieces. Anti-Aircraft Artillery Originally 800 battalions of AA artillery had been planned, but this figure was reduced to 575 in October 1943. Even after this reduction it is interesting to note that AA artillery still had an authorised strength nearly four times that of non divisional field artillery (AA increased 1,750 per cent in three years from 31 December 1940, while field only increased 500 per cent).
