Although the book is useful, it must be carefully checked against source materials. 4 Delbrück studied military problems in the work of Carl von Clausewitz, the best theoretician on the conduct of war. He wrote a biography of Gneisenau, one of the most brilliant adversaries of Napoleon. He discussed military problems with German generals, and carried on a controversy with the best German strategists about Clausewitz's conceptions of the conduct of war.
