However, it is a less radical insight than it may appear. Rather, the imaginary nature of closure is a necessary condition of existence for the production of narrative. If a narrative syntagmation were able to achieve closure, this would result in the termination of narrative exchange which depends upon the boundless and differential nature of syntagmation.
In this context I would like to define ‘being’ as the existence of the subject within an inter-subjectivity. This may occur when the empirical frame through which language comes to exist (the mortal body) is no longer able to physically sustain the effort of language when the body reaches the end of its life. It may also occur at some unimaginable 20 INTRODUCTION point (and as a consequence the iterable nature of language, impossible point) of plenitude when the call to Otherness within the process of narrative production is completely satisfied.
