Scanning is usually more cursory than skimming, and whereas one may scan a text from back to front, skimming is usually carried out in the direction of the text. Whatever approach you adopt, you should allow yourself the freedom to change gear and read more systematically, when you light upon some word or idea that is of interest to you.

A quick flick through will tell you that marriage is referred to on pages 22, 23 and 30. On page 30 you will find the chapter entitled ‘Later Life’, to which you have already referred. However, on page 22 you will find a chapter entitled ‘An Ordered World’, which explains in some detail the clan and moiety system in Aboriginal society. This chapter will give you the information you want, including information about which people are allowed to marry each other; you will need to read it in detail.

What questions would you want to ask her? What feelings does her work evoke in you, that you feel it would be right to share? What suggestions would you like to make about ways of improving her text? What do you know that she might find useful in developing her ideas or stating them more clearly? Have you read anything that you think she should read? Why? All of these questions will help you, if necessary, to decide what to write about this author, should you use her work in an essay.
