By Varol Akman, Ferda Nur Alpaslan (auth.), Paolo Bouquet, Massimo Benerecetti, Luciano Serafini, Patrick Brézillon, Francesca Castellani (eds.)

This quantity includes the papers offered on the moment foreign and - terdisciplinary convention on Modeling and utilizing Context (CONTEXT’99), held in Trento (Italy) from nine to eleven September 1999. CONTEXT’99 is the second one within the CONTEXT sequence. The rst used to be held in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in 1997. The CONTEXT convention sequence is intended to supply an interdisciplinary - rum the place researchers can trade principles, methodologies, and effects on c- textual content, and is more and more turning into an enormous reference for everyone doing examine on context. this is often testi ed by means of the bigger variety of examine components which are represented at CONTEXT’99 (in specific, Philosophy and Cognitive Psychology weren't signi cantly current on the rst conference), and through the quantity and caliber of submitted papers. Speci cally, we obtained 118 papers, generally of fine or first-class caliber. between them, 33 (28%) were permitted as complete papers, and 21 as brief papers. we predict it truly is reasonable to claim that the fifty four papers gathered during this quantity supply a signi cant photograph of the overseas learn on context at the moment occurring. The proposal of context performs an enormous function in lots of parts, either theoretical and utilized, comparable to Formal good judgment, Arti cial Intelligence, Philosophy, Pragm- ics, Computational Linguistics, laptop technology, Cognitive Psychology.

AND THEN [] The consequent is of the same form as a goal, and may therefore contain variables. Each component of the antecedent is an expression in goal form. Implicitly, all variables in the rule are universally quantified, outside the whole rule. The certainty level of a rule is one of suggested, presumed, certain. ATT-Meta applies its rules in a backchaining style. It is given a reasoning goal by a user, and uses rules to generate subgoals in the normal way.

A hypothesis glossed here as “it is being pretended that, presumably at least, H” for some hypothesis H is a statement that the pretence context contains H and that the level of certain for H within that context is at least presumed. A hypothesis of form “it is being pretended that, with certainty at least λ, H” is a highly analogous to a belief hypothesis. Using the same style of notation as we used above for belief hypotheses, it can be expressed as a formula of the form pretend(H, λ). Such a formula is outside the pretence context.

On the one hand one has the ambivalence between ontological, linguistic and epistemic contexts. The previous arguments intend to establish that, even if one sticks to a purely epistemic account of this common ground, there are important distinctions to be made concerning the attitudes that are commonly held. These distinctions are perhaps familiar to epistemologists or philosophers of science. Nevertheless linguists seem to have developed their notions by paying attention to previous discussions in philosophy of language, and these discussion tend to be heavily motivated by ontological, rather than epistemological, concerns.
