Mrs. Albright: I’m retiring this year. Girl, I can’t wait to get out of here. My girlfriend was punched out and thrown over a table at Pearson High School. We’re both going to retire and live the country life. Mrs. Smith: What’s going on here is happening everywhere. The student who socked the officer is the same one whose parents are suing Mr. G. for interceding when he started a fight in his class. The teacher pulled him off the other student. I guess he won’t be able to make his court date now.

Incidents this bold are not the norm, but the tensions inherent in the scene are: a strong gang presence, a pressure on young men and women to affiliate or at least show deference, an overarching sense of insecurity by youth and adults in the community. Although this school has a leadership—principal and teachers—who care deeply and work very hard to sustain this educational institution as a safe place where high academic standards are achieved, it has been difficult to accomplish these goals for many reasons.

Gwen’s poetry is pungent with her gift of second sight and perfumed with sometimes lyrical and sometimes sparse language. Every time I sit down to write, I am drawn to Gwen’s playing with words, much to the dismay of my editor Jim Banks, since I do not have the skill to accomplish what Gwen did with language. Barbara Ann Sizemore was a second mother figure to my husband and dear friend to me. Barbara probably accomplished more in turning around the achievement gap in real schools than anyone else I can think of, despite the fact that she had to scratch hard to properly fund her work.
