Discussion Points on Radiation Safety Evolution of Radiological Protection [1] Around 9 years ago, ICRP embarked on a process of rationalizing and clarifying the system of radiological protection. The new ICRP recommendations [2] were the basis for the new set of recommendations that were approved by the Main Commission in March 2007 at its meeting in Essen in Germany. These recommendations will replace the Commission’s previous recommendations from 1990 [3]. The new Recommendations take account of new biological and physical information and trends in setting of protection standards.
Therefore, concrete targets for achievements in research activities within 5 years are as follows. 8 S. Yamashita Scientific Research Aspect Goals are (1) identification of signature gene(s) or sensitive gene groups relating to radiation carcinogenesis; (2) molecular biochemical, molecular pathological, and molecular biological characterization of radio-responsive gene groups involved in chromosomal/genetic instability; and (3) elucidation of differences in the molecular mechanism between early and late carcinogenesis in the same organs in young exposed persons.
