Seeing publication as some kind of ‘game’ can stimulate new writers to find out what the ‘rules’ are and how the ‘referees’ apply them, so that they can then go off to ‘train’ and ‘play’. Discussing the pros and cons of targeting journals that we do not enjoy reading – though they might ‘count’ heavily in external scoring systems – is an important stage in developing motivation to write at all. The key point is that colleagues will not read our writing, no matter how fresh we think our style is, if we do not make some allowance for their perspective.
