Here the comparison is overwhelmingly favorable, since such studies are not generally based on national random samples. In this light, the NIC's participant sample looks very good, indeed nonpareil, despite a noticeably lower response rate and somewhat greater biases than in the best academic surveys.

The process begins with an initial interview and invitation to participate. In anticipation of the weekend, the participants-to-be begin to behave more like ideal citizens. They begin to pay attention to the news, to discuss the issues with friends and family, and to read the briefing materials. Then comes the deliberation on the weekend itself, in small-group discussions and dialogues with experts and politicians. Then, finally, the participants are polled again, to see what their opinions are after deliberation.

But the former may not be well connected to policy alternatives, given how little attention most citizens devote to politics, and might well change if more citizens thought and learned more about it. Deliberative Polling can thus help inform media coverage of politics by providing some view of what the public would think about political choices with the benefit of more information, discussion, and reflection. In addition, the probability sampling and extended face-to-face discussion in Deliberative Polling provides a healthy contrast with such other species of broadcast dialogue as viewer or listener call-ins and televised town meetings.
