Nevertheless, similar processes would seem to be at work. Modern Indo-European languages employ some obligatory grammatical categories of this sort, as well, especially gender, but these sorts of classificatory processes do not seem to have the same importance that they do in languages like Navaho and ASL. One is, of course, tempted to see in this way of sorting the world into similar object-class or action-class categories a relationship that might reveal something about the way in which languages (and language) evolve.

16 Chomsky reacted to what appeared to be a lack of intellectual discipline in the study of language, especially the lack of a theoretical framework for understanding and predicting linguistic behavior, seemingly a fundamentally important task of a science of language. Instead of seeing infinite diversity among languages, Chomsky was impressed with the similarities and regularities. He also argued persuasively that children could not learn their native languages simply through imitation or through an operant conditioning paradigmthat languages were too complicated and that children were exposed to only a tiny sample of the potentially infinite number of sentences that any language could encompass.
