By National Research Council, Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences, Board on Army Science and Technology, Committee of Soldier Power/Energy Systems

The critical attribute of the evolution of the strive against soldier in recent times is an more and more refined array of sensing, communications, and similar electronics to be used in battlefield events. the main severe issue for retaining this evolution may be the improvement of strength provide structures in a position to working these electronics successfully for missions as much as seventy two hours lengthy. to deal with the problem, it is crucial that new techniques be sought on tips on how to combine and gear those electronics. to help in addressing this challenge, the military asked the nationwide examine Council to study the state-of-the-art and to suggest applied sciences that may help the fast improvement of potent strength platforms for the long run warrior. This record offers the result of that assessment. It offers an overview of assorted know-how recommendations for various energy point specifications, energy process layout, and soldier strength sinks. The record additionally describes destiny layout suggestions, targeting low-power platforms. innovations for expertise improvement and method layout are provided.

Cost savings. Requires new battlefield fuel. Fuel cell (methanol) Emerging. Not considered. Beta prototypes developed at power levels of 20 to 50 W.

FIGURES OF MERIT The governing figure of merit used to discriminate among and, in the final analysis, to rank-order the technologies was total system mass (as estimated from the specific energy of the underlying technology). Other figures of merit used to evaluate the technologies and systems are described in detail in Appendix C. The committee estimated technology readiness levels (TRLs) to determine the systems worthy of consideration. Definitions for the nine TRLs are also contained in Appendix C.

The good news is that solutions exist in all regimes to satisfy known power requirements, and major breakthroughs in power/energy source technologies are not needed. To satisfy the needs of future warriors on the battlefield, the Army must move power to the forefront of considerations in developing and acquiring soldier electronics, especially communications. It also must invest in the means to analyze power requirements, so as to take advantage of reductions that can only be achieved by efficient power management.
