The dominant trend is for members of a rural household to migrate to urban areas to sell their labour and remit their income to their respective families back in rural areas. With the opening up of economies, diversifying activities have created opportunities leading to rural–urban migration in the recent past (Sjoberg 1994; Liu 1991; Wong 1994 and Fazal 2013). Migration also has observable gender biases depending upon the type of jobs available in rural and urban areas and social environment of the rural place in terms of facilitating or hindering male/female migration.
