With the increase of ethnic diversity in Hawai'i, children needed a common tool for interethnic communication. Consequently, a pidginized form of English was used as a bridge between the various groups, not only in the plantation environment, but also in other social contexts. In the present study I will take into account both ethnic, geographic, register and age variation when analyzing the data of contemporary HCE, as described in the following section.
