GEOLOGY: MORE THAN JUST ROCKS Most people think of geology as the study of rocks. It certainly includes that, but it’s much more. When you look at a rock, you can describe its color and shape. But what is even more interesting is how that rock formed and how it got to its present location. That involves seeing the big picture—the picture of the whole earth. Geology is the scientific study of the history and physical nature of the earth. It explains how the color and shape of a rock gives clues to the history of that rock.

Beyond is the Appalachian Plateau, which includes the Allegheny Plateau and the Cumberland Plateau. Did You Know? Some mountain ranges, like the Catskill Mountains in New York, are actually plateaus that have eroded in places to make valleys These dissected plateaus give the appearance of mountains. The Appalachian Mountains are some of the oldest mountains on Earth. You’ll find three major types of rocks in the Appalachians, depending on when and how they formed. The oldest rocks are usually metamorphic rocks, which were originally sedimentary or igneous rocks.

NATURAL RESOURCES There are three major types of fossil fuels—coal, oil, and natural gas, and the Eastern Coast region has plenty of all three. They’re called fossil fuels because just like fossils, they formed long, long ago from living organisms. Most fossil fuels formed hundreds of millions of years ago—even before the dinosaurs. Many areas were covered with swamps, huge trees, and other plants. There were also shallow inland seas with tiny floating sea creatures called plankton. Coal, oil, and natural gas all form through a similar process.
