Von Haartman 1971, O’Connor 1985, 1986). In this paper, I examine the relationship between breeding site quality and occupancy in Barn Owls Tyto alba, in an agricultural area in south Scotland. Site quality is measured by the amount of suitable foraging habitat around nests, by the mean number of young produced per nesting attempt, and by occupancy as the number of years out of a total of 20 that the site was occupied. The study concentrates on the quality of foraging habitat around nesting places and not on the nesting places themselves.
