Most of these areas show strength in a majority of ranking categories, gaining still more through consistency adjustments. While the cost of living/housing in these areas is often a deterrent, it has risen more slowly than in many coastal and large city areas, helping such college towns rank more favorably. S.

While the model on the website isn’t as comprehensive as this book, nor does it rank all 373 metropolitan areas side by side, it does provide some insight into how individual needs, interests, and tastes can be met. Consistency Adjustment In the Cities Ranked & Rated category scores, some individual cities excel in certain categories but score very poorly in others, while other cities sort of plod along, not being “best in class” in anything but being good overall. An example of the former is New York, which consistently rates at the top of the list in the categories of Arts & Culture, Education, and Leisure—but scores very low for Cost of Living and Economy & Jobs.
